Before Marvel's popular superhero team called The Avengers, there was The Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four was the first superhero team created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. It appeared in Marvel Comics beginning on November 1961 with a self-titled comic known as The Fantastic Four #1.
The Fantastic Four has four members, thus the name of the team- Reed Richards who is considered to be the leader of the team, Susan Storm who is the fiancee of Reed, Johnny who is the brother of Susan, and Ben Grimm who is Reed's best friend and college roommate.
Reed Richards was an intelligent aeronautical engineer who attempted to build the first interstellar ship. He decided to have an immediate test flight when some financers, especially the U.S. government which was a major financer, started to become disinterested on his project.
Ben, who is a successful air force pilot, warned Reed that the shield of the ship may not be strong enough to protect them from intense cosmic radiations which could occur during their interstellar travel but Reed did not listen to Ben's warning because he was desperate to prove the worth of his work and gain scientific glory.
They sneaked into the launch facility, boarded the starship, and blasted off into the unknown. They aimed to voyage into another star system and go back to Earth. However, a solar flare caused a series of cosmic radiations to bombard their craft which led to the abortion of the mission and the crash of the starship. The four people survived the accident but they discovered that the cosmic radiations have mutated them.
Reed has become able to elastically stretch his body and limbs in great lengths and proportions. Susan, who is often called as Sue, has become able to control the light around her body to become invisible. Johnny has become able to produce flames all over his body without burning and this enables him to fly. Ben has acquired immense durability and strength but his appearance has changed severely. He turned into a monstrous golem-like creature.
With their new found powers, the four decided to create a superhero team and use their powers, skills, and intelligence to protect the world. As superheroes they came up with their codenames. Reed was called Mr. Fantastic, Sue was called Invisible Woman, Johnny was called Human Torch, and Ben was called the Thing.
Despite the team work they exhibit when it comes to fighting villains such as Doctor Doom, Galactus, Mole Man, Skrulls, Puppet Master, and others, two members of the team often do not get along well. Johnny's arrogance and impishness often get on the nerves of Ben who has become hot-headed and irritable due to his situation. They often clash and fight with each other.
