That’s before we include the numerous wins in many stage races. The 33-year old currently rides for Team Sky and is widely considered one of the best stage racing riders of all time.

Last year, Froome only managed to get the third spot behind Tom Dumoulin and Geraint Thomas. It was one of his two podium appearances on the Tour de France. Froome was a big favourite to repeat his 2017 success but eventually lost to his compatriot Thomas.

This year, Froome is back as the main favourite for the 2019 edition of the Tour de France. He’s leading the list with odds of 23/20 at Fun88, Ole777, and 10Bet. Geraint Thomas raced his way to victory over favourites such as Froome, Sagan (who won the points classification), and Julian Alaphilippe. This year, Thomas has been beaten to the top favourite spot by his compatriot Chris Froome, although some experts think that he should be the main favourite.

Thomas goes for 11/4 at Fun88, and 10Bet, not that far behind Froome. There’s genuine belief among many cycling experts that Thomas may win the Tour de France this year as well, eventually if pressure for a fifth title gets to Froome.

The 3rd stage of the Tour de France is a race with two faces. The route runs on undulating terrain to a finale for punchers, while in the last 50 kilometres five short and sharp climbs are served. While venturing into the Champagne vineyards the riders tackle Côte de Nanteuil-la-Forêt (1.1 kilometres at 6.8%), Côte d’Hautvillers (900 metres at 10.5%), Côte de Champillon (1.8 kilometer at 6.6%), Côte de Mutigny (900 metres at 12.2%) and Côte du Mont Bernon (1 kilometre at 5%).

The Mutigny is crested 15 kilometres from the line, while the riders tackle the Mont Bernon with 5 kilometres left. To pep up the GC battle the first rider over the Mutigny gains 8 seconds, the second rider 5 seconds and the third man 3.

Pure sprinters won’t stand a chance on this terrain, but it will be interesting to see how the likes of Sagan and Matthews cope. And what about Van Aert? Winning two stages, the cyclocross champion recently made a spectacular stage race debut at the Critérium du Dauphiné.
